Have you heard of our “Ask-a-Pro” series coming up this July? This year on top of our regular #YEW workshops and events, we are excited to offer a brand new Q&A discussion with trade industry professionals throughout the entire month of July – #SALVAGEDESIGN Month! While we know it seems a long time away, we are excited to announce that punch cards are available as of this week at either location – read on for all the details…
How will this work? For most of the month, a salvage “pro” be coming in for a few hours at the location of their choice to answer questions and/or provide a demonstration in-store about using salvaged materials while sharing their general perspective on salvage and reuse. These sessions are only open to pass-holders (passes cost a suggested donation fee of $10+) and all proceeds collected from the event will go directly to our non-profit partners – Historic Seattle & Historic Tacoma.
Who are these Pros anywho? If you are an #EWSalvage Calendar holder, you’ll see that we’ve already got designers, contractors, preservationists, and many more skilled individuals on the calendar. Special guests currently include: Gabe Behrend of Dolan Built Construction, Kinley Deller of King County DNRP/SWD, Connie Kay Interior Design, Jak Moroshan of Modco Design, Rosichelli Design, Pete Tabor of Spacemen LLC, Harmony Weihs of DesignHarmony, just to name a few!
More information will come as we get closer, but suffice it to say it’s good to get in NOW! Sign-up below to receive updates specifically about the Ask-A-Pro Series.
*Are you interested in being one our featured salvage pros? We would love to have you join the schedule – please email marketing ‘at’ ewsalvage.com for more information, share your ideas for a session or to volunteer to be a pro!*

This adventure is FREE and open to all who like a good challenge, have an eagle’s eye for spotting treasure, and a passion for historic adventures!

Take beautiful drive or stroll through different neighborhoods and enjoy the rich history and uniqueness each one has to offer). Check off sites visited and sketch a little picture or take a photo of the sights you’ve seen!

How do you add more character…to that accent wall or other project you’ve been planning for this year?! We’ve always got a few ideas…but what do you think of using the newest member to the custom materials line: Beach Wood (see photo above) from Earthwise? A new addition to the #EWSalvage family is now available for custom order! We are calling this reclaimed lumber ‘beach wood’ and it is remilled at our Tacoma location.
The unique history of this material resulted in the blues, teals and grays that evoke that beachy vibe. It was originally used as scaffolding for a painting company! The reverse (below, right) of the material is also pretty cool, we can’t decide which we like more! Help us decide by casting your vote over at the FB page – bonus: tell us how you’d use this new material.
Come into the showrooms to see samples, get more information & place orders – mention this blog post and save 5% immediately**! You can also email us with your questions and ideas!
**Are you a designer, architect, business or property owner interested in this reclaimed material or other options? Let us know – we will even come to YOU or your business and have trade discount opportunities we would love to offer you – contact or speak with Kadence at marketing “at” ewsalvage.com for more information.

We are also quite happy to be the setting for these events, shoots or creative-endeavor-for-which-we-don’t-yet-even-have-a-word: just send us an email with your inquiry and we will see what we can do!
Last week, Seattle-based singer/songwriter Debbie Miller and photographer, Nate Watters, gave us a call requesting permission to stop by for drop-in photo shoot. It occurred to us, that seeing as we get this question often, how inspiring many people find salvage and salvage yards, yet don’t know quite how to use that inspiration..or what they’re even allowed to do with it.
EWCrew understand this request – that’s part of the fun of the salvage yard, right? We know all too well how chock full our smartphones’ storage are of salvage photos! In that light, we wanted to post a reminder that OF COURSE you can take photos at Earthwise stores – we absolutely encourage it! We just ask that you give credit when social sharing with the #EWSalvage hashtag or email us when you do so we can delight in your creativity as well – plus we are almost always happy to help promote your work as well if you’re a creative entrepreneur! (HELLO, #EWFamous promotion!)
This got us to thinking about how many people don’t know about or don’t take advantage of many services we offer that all too often would save you time or money, OR BOTH while also inspiring you or your business or the world – we like to think BIG right along with #YEW!
We’ve been offering workshops officially for a year now, we’ve heard many requests for more in-depth and more project-based themes. From building a door bookcase to touring #EWFamous breweries in Tacoma’s Downtown, this year offers 12 workshops for you to try starting at just $10! We also add sporadic drop-in sessions throughout the year to demonstrate new ways to use salvage or DIY projects we are working on. Make sure to let us know what workshop YOU want to take here!
We LOVE working with #YEW to directly impact the thriving communities of which we are so lucky to be a part! We are community event participants whenever possible and applicable to our mission – if you have an event coming up, let us know and we will put it on the calendar to help you get the word out, or we are happy to hear about sponsorship and outreach opportunities as well. Keep an eye on the calendar as well – there are volunteer opportunities that are popping up all the time and we’d love you to join the EWcrew when we participate.
Maybe you’re not available to participate? That’s ok! Consider making a salvage materials donation to Earthwise and a portion of those proceeds will go directly to the non-profit partner of your choice – Find out more about our salvage services here! We also offer reduced prices or donations for many projects in which we participate; if you are a member of a community organization, school, non-profit, theater, or organization seeking materials or a gift for a project or you/your organization are hosting an event and believe sponsorship or participation from Earthwise would benefit attendees, please let us know!
Need to figure out how to make barnwood when you can’t find any at Earthwise? Chalkboard paint only comes in black…and costs $twenty-seven dollars A QUART?! How do you get the paint off those face plates you fell in love with? How the heck can I repurpose a bedspring? All of these questions and more are easily answered with EWSalvage Kits: they come with everything you need to make your salvaged projects that much simpler! Have you tried any of them? Starting at just $3 for the petina kits (PLUS unlimited 50-cent refills when you save the canister), they’re always a good way to introduce your people to salvage as well.
The blog you’re on now is where we post tutorials that we have personally tried, made display samples news about new projects and announcements that pertain to EW. But we also LOVE putting DIY projects as we find them on here. Staff members at Earthwise are on the cusp of industry trends, especially those that involve salvage and sustainability. We don’t charge for design or project advice – in fact, we LOVE hearing about your latest project and helping with it! If needed, you can even setup a time that works for you to tell us about your project and ask for our creative input
We love what we do. No seriously though – this isn’t just a job! Many of the employees started working at Earthwise because they were already salvage fanatics and often spend their weekend much the same way they spend their workdays: working on salvaged projects or looking for reusable stuff!
Reclaimed wood seems to be something that REALLY inspires you guys – we see TONS of innovative new ideas in those #EWFamous posts and emails. This special natural resource is exciting to work with and offer on our end as well! Many of you have taken advantage of our custom milling services but we are excited to offer a NEW extended carpentry service at our Seattle location: custom precision cuts starting at $5/cut*! Now that gym flooring table you’ve been thinking about just got more accessible, right?!
*some limitations and minimum requirements apply – please call the Seattle location for exact details.
This year on top of our regular workshops and events, we are excited to offer a brand new Q&A discussion with trade industry professionals throughout the entire month of July – #SALVAGEDESIGNMONTH! These sessions will be open to pass-buyers (Suggested donation of $10+ for up to 10-sessions punchcards – 100% proceeds from this will go to Historic Seattle and Historic Tacoma) be posted on the calendar – sign-up here to receive updates on the Ask-A-Pro Series:
Maybe you don’t have the tools at home to finish your project quite like you want. Well, don’t worry – EWSalvage would love to get you in contact with the finishing company or service provider that specializes in what you need and is familiar with using salvaged materials. We provide resources like this on a daily basis and we almost ALWAYS have at least one trusted provider that we would love to send you to.

This post was originally written in 2014, however we do keep it updated with current employees and EWCrew bios! We want you to know who you’re working with just like we want to know who you are!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the #EWSalvage team! Because many of you have asked, we decided to do a little introduction post about the entire staff here! We’re a small, close-knit team and you’ll notice that even though we all work at Earthwise, we all came to work at a salvage company for different reasons.
Kurt (aka The Worktrauskas) is the owner of Earthwise! He enjoys mushroom hunting and fishing (we enjoy eating his scavenged mushrooms and fish). He’s an avid traveler, scuba diver, and salvage hunter. He opened Earthwise the same year his son was born. Oh and did I mention he has a degree in Marine Biology? That’s our Kurt!
Kadence is [insert whatever title here for whichever “hat” she has on at this moment]…? I’m pretty sure she LIVES at Earthwise but on the rare occasion she’s not at Earthwise (or doing something for Earthwise) she’s probably running. She’s
prepping for recently completed her first half marathon and is now training for her next one! She also loves to cook fancy-but-good-for-you foods, takes beautiful pictures of everything, enjoys brunch, farmer’s markets, and weird oddity or antique shops. She has an affinity for vintage taxidermy and bizarre, unusual organic foods.
Lacy is the Seattle Store Manager. She started as the intern 3 winters ago and never left. Finally, Earthwise hired her to make it easier on everybody. She is a project-aholic and has sooo many projects she had to start a blog to give her the motivation to finish them. She loves thinking creatively with salvage, crafting, sewing and went to school for Interior Design.
Elise is the Tacoma Store Manager! She is the ideal Earthwise customer: working on projects around her home and greenhouse with salvaged materials whenever she’s not working. She loves camping and hiking and enjoying time with her dogs. She’s also a metal worker and creates beautiful jewelry! You might have seen her wares at the Nitty Gritty Tacoma Art Show this past October – it’s never too late to buy on Etsy.
Aaron is the Acquisitions Manager at Earthwise in Tacoma. Aaron spent 26 months in Uganda building a Canopy Zip-line while in the Peace Corps. He loves to hike and has been to the top of Mt Rainer AND Mt Sabinyo. He JUST moved to Tacoma and loves exploring his new home with his (also new) dog, Clyde! Aaron will be the entertainment at this year’s company holiday party as he can walk around on his hands. But can he ice skate?!
Diana (aka The Lighting Lady) has been at Earthwise for 8 years!! She’s currently the longest tenured employee AND is the only employee to have worked at the old location besides Kurt. In addition to lighting, she LOVES working with glass and building new stained glass projects from many a broken but that were unsalvageable. She brings her pieces in from time to time for consignment, so be on the watch for her beautiful works of art.
Matt is a Seattle transplant from New Mexico and can be found at Earthwise in Seattle on the weekends. He loves to build and typically builds any and all fixtures for the displays. In addition to working at EW, he is a music DJ, builds model aircraft, and indulges in the fine arts of video gaming and voracious graphic novel reading.
Jeff is the muscle of the salvage process, he is the Seattle salvage crew lead. He is very familiar to the construction and deconstruction of homes because in his spare time he repairs and restores his West Seattle home. He’s been a fisherman, a rancher, AND a lumberjack!
Yes, our ONE salvage crew removes, picks-up, transfers, and delivers ALL of the materials between both stores! We actually have TWO crews now – find out more! These guys are talented!
Mike C. is the Tacoma salvage lead & crew. He is a Certified Wildland Firefighter and enjoys working out to stay fit for the really heavy salvaged items – he likes to “pump the iron.” Mike has been in gymnastics since he young and prides himself on his spider monkey-like tendencies. He has a GIANT cassette tape music collection and loves to sing along with all the jams.
Brandon is the Assistant Store Manager in Seattle and part-time graphic designer at Earthwise. He has a freelance graphic design business and plays guitar in a band called Wavy Caps. He loves micro brews, Jazz music, and cold weather…he did grow up in Colorado after all.
Mark is the other half of the Seattle salvage crew. He used to work for a local company making painstakingly detailed figurines from some very well-played video games. More on that another time. He likes space, science, reuse and history.
There you have it! We will keep this page updated with new additions as they arrive! (While we’re at it, have you checked out the job openings at EWSavalge, lately? Your bio would be a PERFECT fit here after all). We like to work hard while having fun! And don’t worry, as the saying goes, “You don’t have to be crazy to work here. We’ll train you.” Have a great holiday!
We are SO excited to announce that we are officially partnering with Ghostruck, a local company that specializes in pick-up and delivery services! As of November 1st, all client deliveries will be facilitated with Ghostruck so the salvage crew can focus even more on getting quirky and interesting items into the Earthwise locations for you to peruse! Find out more about the connection and how it works at either location & check out how easy it is to have your next salvage purchase delivered!
Do you remember your first visit to Earthwise? Did you find yourself wandering, pondering, or just asking why? Or maybe, you haven’t visited one of the stores yet! At Earthwise, we strive to know the answers to everything salvage, everything vintage, and well everything needed to help you with your project. Having worked at Earthwise for over 2 years in the Seattle location, I have been asked a lot of the same questions as well as some unusual ones. Today, I will share some the most frequently asked questions from customers with you…
Earthwise has been in business for OVER 20 years in Seattle, and we just recently celebrated 2 years in Tacoma!
Earthwise is owned by Kurt Petrauskas, and he’s been here since the verrrrrrrry beginning of the salvage movement in Seattle…heck – the Pacific Northwest practically! He was a contractor that dabbled in demolition and would save pieces from projects because they were too awesome to throw away. When his garage started to overflow he held a yard sale, which became more and more frequent and before you know it Earthwise was officially born in 1991.
While we have been at our current Seattle location for a little over 8 years, this is our third SODO neighborhood address. Before Seattle’s current home, we were at 1st Ave S & Lander (the big Red Barn), 2462 1st Ave S; and before that, we called a now razed building at 7th Ave S & Lander our very first SODO home. And, A LONG TIME ago we were in a garage and yard as an interesting garage-sale-type establishment in Kenmore. Check out the slideshow of our past locations in this post for some visuals.
Yes – we sure do, and it’s a mighty fun place. In fact, I can’t believe you haven’t been there yet! While we’re on the subject…
Yes…and no? When I think of the Tacoma store, it’s exactly what I would expect Earthwise in Tacoma to be! It’s in a vintage sawmill for pete’s sakes – how cool is that!? And, yes, technically, it is the same square footage but with more yard space, but no, the store definitely has its own Earthwise flair – which is a good thing because it reflects its local community and staff. This same saw mill is where we still mill all of our reclaimed, old growth beams into slightly more manageable sizes. Take a tour of the Tacoma store here!
Our salvage crew (1 box truck and 2 guys) go to homes and buildings within 50 miles of the Seattle- and Tacoma-areas that are being torn down, deconstructed, and remodeled…THIS is how we get 90% our cool stuff! The rest is from all of YEW – your donations, your drop-offs, and of course, the items you bring in to sell us!
Earthwise specializes in vintage building materials, anything pre-1950’s we love! But, as we always say, there are LOADS of exceptions to this general rule. If it’s high quality, rare, quirky, funky, or just different and not from that era – we still might be able to take it and/or even reimburse you for it! Check this handy list or give either location a call/shoot us an email with photos of items you want to know whether we will accept. And, of course, you can always bring it in!
Earthwise is staffed by 14 people – between 2 locations! Many of us came to work here from our more formal trainings as designers or musicians or other creatively-minded fields; some have construction backgrounds like our owner; and one was even a welder on a fishing boat! If you are interested in joining our salvage family – check out our current openings! We promise, you don’t have to be crazy to work here – we can teach you!
We work with everyone you can think of! Homeowners, contractors, restaurants, historic properties, designers, photographers, theater groups, artists…probably at least one person in your family! We also work with three non-profit partners and many local community organizations on regular basis. Many people are restoring old homes or building new, sustainable buildings right here in our community, but we’ve had clients from all over the world! We feature projects and whole buildings that have used our stuff through our #EWFamous inspiration section – send us your project photos using Earthwise stuff and your photo might be featured!
The salvage industry in Seattle helps to reduce ONLY 7-9% of construction debris and reusable materials going into the landfill each year…and that’s with the 3 salvage stores that are here! BUT that’s increased from just 3% -5% 6 years ago! We can continue reducing our carbon footprint by making larger community efforts to ensure quality, reusable materials are reused and/or recycled.
**BONUS INFO: Yes, we have tape measures for your use while shopping! Yes, we have a public restroom. The best way to shop at either location is with a coffee in hand, being open to being inspired because – TRUST ME! – no matter what you think you are looking for, something else you hadn’t thought of will somehow make its way home with you.
Written by Lacy Kabrich, Earthwise Salvage – Seattle Store Manager.
As summer quickly slips behind us and our 20 + 2 year anniversary saleabrations come to a close, we can’t help but reflect on some of the fantastic moments we’ve had here at Earthwise and thank all of you for being part of those. Each person that walks into our retail locations, and that we meet through the process of acquisitions has a unique story that lives on through each piece that takes residence among the treasures here at Earthwise. Every time we receive photos from customers of a cast off relic that’s been brought back to life, whether it be through repurposing or reuse, we feel our mission has been realized and can’t help but be proud of the fact that we are a part of the larger whole in making salvage a viable and sustainable lifestyle. Each one of you that shares your projects, your story, your comments is an integral part of what keeps the vision alive and we can’t thank you enough for all that you do. So, we extend to you all a hearty thank you for all the memories you have made with us over the last 22 years and we look forward to sharing with you at least 22 more!
Are you tired of the monotony of corporate retail? Have you watched (more than) your fair share of American Pickers, PawnStars, American Restoration, or Salvage Dogs and have thought to yourself where one finds such an awesome job?! Are you looking to use your talent and experience where it will be appreciated by a local company and its customers? Earthwise is looking for YOU!
We currently have an open part-time position of approximately 24-30 hours per week, but may move to full-time. You would be a perfect fit if you are into reuse and sustainability, love old or antique building materials, are customer-motivated, friendly and unabashedly curious.
Interested candidates, visit the posting here for more information & apply!
We’ve been respecting the past & sustaining the future since 1991 and we are so thankful to be celebrating our 2 years in Tacoma this year! If you haven’t visited the Tacoma store – NOW is the time! Make sure to stay in touch with #EWSalvage each week for updates! We can’t wait to see you this month!
We are pleased to have successfully launched our first #EWSalvage Workshop here in Tacoma. Over 18 die hard #EWSalvage friends braved the chilly wind and rain to gather around the old sequoia, learning the benefits of Lead Out Paint Remover. One of our guests even got down & dirty with helping scrape old paint off of various surfaces we had applied the Lead Out to. Loved how safe it felt to spread this soy-based product to our wooden rosettes, tiles, doors and wood window frames, knowing that it now rendered the lead-based paint which had previously covered these pieces, non-toxic and hazard free.
Each participant received a complimentary goody bag jam-packed with handy Earthwise information and a fun mini red measuring tape along with enjoying a light mid morning snack of croissants, fruit, cheese and beverages. We closed our workshop with a drawing for a copy of Joanne Palmisano’s book ‘ Salvage Secrets Design & Decor ‘ which lucky lady, Bronwyn, is now the proud owner of! Congratulations to you, Bronwyn!
It was great to see so many of our attendees stay after the workshop to enjoy the 15% discount they received just for taking part! Being able to spend some time with a few people from our creative Earthwise community, sharing tips, tricks, food, and a few laughs really re-energized us and left us eagerly anticipating our next gathering! Looking forward to an ever growing future full of Salvage fun, stay tuned for more details. Until next time…SALVAGE ON!!

If you haven’t heard of TAGRO, here is a little history. Short for “Tacoma Gro”, TAGRO premium mix soil is made by the city of Tacoma from a blend of waste water byproducts, called biosolids, and other weed-free gardening components. Consumers in the greater Tacoma area have been using this environmentally friendly product in landscaping and vegetable gardens since 1991. The best thing about the mix is it’s FREE!
Now if you need something to plant in we have 2” x 6” material at .50 cents a linear foot to build raised beds. Earthwise always has a myriad of things like pots, boxes, jars, buckets and sinks to add soil and a green growing plant to. We even use orphaned toilet tanks and retired barbeques as vessels for growing. There is always something to reuse in the garden here.
For more information on getting some TAGRO for your garden go to www.tagro.com or call (253) 502-2150. Photos and article by Karen Carston, Earthwise Tacoma.
Our Tacoma store is on the Eastside of Tacoma – just up McKinley Hill, minutes from the Tacoma Dome and Downtown. Easily accessible from all major freeways or public transportation (how Earthwise of you!). This location is housed in a vintage lumber mill that still operates today!
Here is just a tiny sample of what you can expect to see when visiting this location, however, please remember it is always our advice to come in, chat with us, experience the salvage and feel the history!
