How We DIY: Beachwood Display Walls

This hot weather has been leaving the EWCrew in Seattle needing a little time on a beach. We’ve also been itching to build a project since we have such great weather. All of this is perfect given Earthwise’s newest reclaimed wood product: beachwood.  If you haven’t been in the stores lately, you may have missed this product’s arrival but have no fear – there’s lots to go around!

Tacoma EWSalvage Beachwood in stock
So, what is this “beachwood,” I’m talking about? The EWBeachwood is vintage scaffolding from sunny California that has been lime washed to give it a beautiful, white, cream, and gray coloring to it. But if you look at it from the side you see it has a secret… It has the most beautiful teal, blue, and purple stripes on the side.  The colored edges tell a story! Part of this material’s history goes that this scaffolding was used by a painting company with multiple teams. To differentiate one teams tools from the the others, each complete scaffolding system had a color assignment to match that team. This way the painting teams would know whose scaffolding was whose (personally I would have wanted to be on the purple team but all colors are great).
This material is 1-3/4″ thick by 9-1/2″ wide and pretty much as long as you want it so its great for benches, tables, shelves (since it has the great colored side detail), headboards – you name it! It is also available in a 5/8″ milled version, perfect for maximizing the square footage each piece can cover – plus this materials is reversible! This is great for texture walls, furring out a beam, using as veneer, or as a back splash.
Since this material has come in, all the staff has been drooling over it and creatively thinking about what WE could use it for. We finally got a chance to do a weekend project and play with this great material when the Seattle EWCrew built a new texture wall for the front display! We wanted to showcase all of our favorite aspects of it: the lime-washed fronts, the vibrant colored sides, and the cool, almost spalted looking reverse of the milled boards. The question was HOW does one showcase all the great aspects of it in one easy to see application?
A texture wall of course! The bottom of the wall is straight 8′ pieces which run vertically (perfect if you wanted to add interest to a wall or room).  At 36″ from the ground, we added a chair rail made from the colored strips and other strips of the inside which show that the material is actually of ply-like construction. Everybody had to pick their favorite piece, of course, so the colors are in varying thicknesses and lengths, which only adds to the variety, diverse colors and interest this material has to offer. Last but not least, we installed staggered pieces displaying both the front and back of this material above the chair rail. Since the scaffolding is not a solid beam, but many layers glued together to create a very heavy, very sturdy piece of lumber the crosscut shows all the details of the wood.
Reclaimed Beachwood Chair Rail Detail
We also played around with sanding the wood as that is a question we need to have the answers for! Sanding the wood too much removes the lime-washed gray finish but since you still need a smooth surface (especially if it will be in a high traffic area), we suggest using a steel or wire brush to remove the loose debris and then sealing it with a flat varnish preserving the finish and character of this unique materials but also saving you from splinters! <–No one wants those!
Tacoma EWSalvage Beachwood Dispaly Wall
The bottom line? Its great that we have so much of the material because it can be used for almost anything AND gets the EWCrew stamp-of-approval. And, as always if you share your beachwood project photos (or any project photo for that matter) we will send you a 15% coupon! Come in and get inspired. What will you use it for?

Your Dream Design Project is Here Somewhere: EWSalvage Reclaimed Finishes & Materials Line

EWSalvage Reclaimed Beachwood at the Seattle Showroom.

How do you add more character…to that accent wall or other project you’ve been planning for this year?! We’ve always got a few ideas…but what do you think of using the newest member to the custom materials line: Beach Wood (see photo above) from Earthwise? A new addition to the #EWSalvage family is now available for custom order! We are calling this reclaimed lumber ‘beach wood’ and it is remilled at our Tacoma location.

The unique history of this material resulted in the blues, teals and grays that evoke that beachy vibe. It was originally used as scaffolding for a painting company! The reverse (below, right) of the material is also pretty cool, we can’t decide which we like more! Help us decide by casting your vote over at the FB page – bonus: tell us how you’d use this new material.

How-to Upcycle your Dryer Drum

A common question the EWcrew (especially the weekenders) gets asked is, “What are we working on?” Our customers have us pegged as project do-ers and to be honest, it’s hard to work at Earthwise and not be inspired to have a few projects going on! If you stop by either store on the weekend, that’s when you see most of these projects happening.

Recently, the Seattle store came into possession of a metal washer drum. While everybody wanted to scrap it, store manager Lacy had a better idea.  Seattle just expanded the pedestal sink and bathroom display room to include mirrors and more sinks and the room was lacking a little pizzazz. So she pitched the idea to the crew of using the metal washer drum as a lamp shade and building a light fixture for inside it.

While Matt dismantled the non-working washer for the drum, Diana wired up a 4-light fixture (learn how to do your own simple rewiring in May – Seattle & Tacoma). From there the assembly was quick and easy and added just the right touch to the space!

7 Inpsiring EWSalvage Services You Never Knew Existed!

The Debbie Miller at EWSalvage Seattle

Last week, Seattle-based singer/songwriter Debbie Miller and photographer, Nate Watters, gave us a call requesting permission to stop by for drop-in photo shoot. It occurred to us, that seeing as we get this question often, how inspiring many people find salvage and salvage yards, yet don’t know quite how to use that inspiration..or what they’re even allowed to do with it.

EWCrew understand this request – that’s part of the fun of the salvage yard, right? We know all too well how chock full our smartphones’ storage are of salvage photos! In that light, we wanted to post a reminder that OF COURSE you can take photos at Earthwise stores – we absolutely encourage it! We just ask that you give credit when social sharing with the #EWSalvage hashtag or email us when you do so we can delight in your creativity as well – plus we are almost always happy to help promote your work as well if you’re a creative entrepreneur! (HELLO, #EWFamous promotion!)

This got us to thinking about how many people don’t know about or don’t take advantage of many services we offer that all too often would save you time or money, OR BOTH while also inspiring you or your business or the world – we like to think BIG right along with #YEW!

1. Workshops & Demonstrations:

We’ve been offering workshops officially for a year now, we’ve heard many requests for more in-depth and more project-based themes. From building a door bookcase to touring #EWFamous breweries in Tacoma’s Downtown, this year offers 12 workshops for you to try starting at just $10! We also add sporadic drop-in sessions throughout the year to demonstrate new ways to use salvage or DIY projects we are working on. Make sure to let us know what workshop YOU want to take here!

2. Community Outreach & Volunteer Opportunities:

We LOVE working with #YEW to directly impact the thriving communities of which we are so lucky to be a part! We are community event participants whenever possible and applicable to our mission – if you have an event coming up, let us know and we will put it on the calendar to help you get the word out, or we are happy to hear about sponsorship and outreach opportunities as well. Keep an eye on the calendar as well – there are volunteer opportunities that are popping up all the time and we’d love you to join the EWcrew when we participate.

Maybe you’re not available to participate? That’s ok! Consider making a salvage materials donation to Earthwise and a portion of those proceeds will go directly to the non-profit partner of your choice – Find out more about our salvage services here! We also offer reduced prices or donations for many projects in which we participate; if you are a member of a community organization, school, non-profit, theater, or organization seeking materials or a gift for a project or you/your organization are hosting an event and believe sponsorship or participation from Earthwise would benefit attendees, please let us know!

3. Petina & DIY Salvage Kits:

Need to figure out how to make barnwood when you can’t find any at Earthwise? Chalkboard paint only comes in black…and costs $twenty-seven dollars A QUART?! How do you get the paint off those face plates you fell in love with? How the heck can I repurpose a bedspring? All of these questions and more are easily answered with EWSalvage Kits: they come with everything you need to make your salvaged projects that much simpler! Have you tried any of them? Starting at just $3 for the petina kits (PLUS unlimited 50-cent refills when you save the canister), they’re always a good way to introduce your people to salvage as well.

4. The Salvage Strip & FREE Project Advice:

The blog you’re on now is where we post tutorials that we have personally tried, made display samples news about new projects and announcements that pertain to EW. But we also LOVE putting DIY projects as we find them on here. Staff members at Earthwise are on the cusp of industry trends, especially those that involve salvage and sustainability. We don’t charge for design or project advice – in fact, we LOVE hearing about your latest project and helping with it! If needed, you can even setup a time that works for you to tell us about your project and ask for our creative input

We love what we do. No seriously though – this isn’t just a job! Many of the employees started working at Earthwise because they were already salvage fanatics and often spend their weekend much the same way they spend their workdays: working on salvaged projects or looking for reusable stuff!

5. NEW Expanded Carpentry Services:

Reclaimed wood seems to be something that REALLY inspires you guys – we see TONS of innovative new ideas in those #EWFamous posts and emails. This special natural resource is exciting to work with and offer on our end as well! Many of you have taken advantage of our custom milling services but we are excited to offer a NEW extended carpentry service at our Seattle location: custom precision cuts starting at $5/cut*! Now that gym flooring table you’ve been thinking about just got more accessible, right?!

*some limitations and minimum requirements apply – please call the Seattle location for exact details.

The Grace Chapel Salvage: In Photos

This church was in Ballard: Grace Gospel Church. Although the church been used since the time it was built in 1906, the current congregation chose to sell the building due to the fact that  the “church body had gotten smaller, the repairs to [the] older building were costly and our resources were slim,” states Pastor Sharon, on the church’s website. She went on to say,”We could no longer ignore the situation we were in and after many congregational meetings we entered into a sales agreement to sell our beloved building.”

Although submitted as a potential nominee for historic building designation, the building was not deemed historically significant by the Department of Neighborhoods according to the Land Use Bulletin Decision on the City of Seattle’s website. Earthwise also searched the Washington State Digital Archives in vain for any historic photos of the church (and we may have also gotten a bit distracted by all of the FREE, downloadable, high quality historic photos of Seattle, Tacoma and all over Washington State that are available online here).

Prior to demolition, Earthwise crews have been salvaging materials from this church. We managed to save many original elements of the building, including: maghogany church pews, opaque ‘pinwheel’ glass church windows, entry and interior doors with hardware, and what is likely to be the original lighted cross emblem, which would have been used on the exterior of the church but removed and placed in attic storage at some point in time. These items will live on in our community through reuse.

For more information on the move of the congregation of Grace Gospel Church, visit the website. These items were salvaged by Earthwise in Seattle; questions about these items? Feel free to contact the Seattle location by phone (206) 624-4510 or email at seattle@ewsalvage.com. This article was written by Kadence Englehardt, Earthwise Salvage.

Waste Makes Good Taste

Good tasting vegetables, that is!

If you haven’t heard of TAGRO, here is a little history. Short for “Tacoma Gro”, TAGRO premium mix soil is made by the city of Tacoma from a blend of waste water byproducts, called biosolids, and other weed-free gardening components. Consumers in the greater Tacoma area have been using this environmentally friendly product in landscaping and vegetable gardens since 1991. The best thing about the mix is it’s FREE!

Now if you need something to plant in we have 2” x 6” material at .50 cents a linear foot to build raised beds. Earthwise always has a myriad of things like pots, boxes, jars, buckets and sinks to add soil and a green growing plant to. We even use orphaned toilet tanks and retired barbeques as vessels for growing. There is always something to reuse in the garden here.

For more information on getting some TAGRO for your garden go to www.tagro.com or call (253) 502-2150. Photos and article by Karen Carston, Earthwise Tacoma.
