This exceptional old growth coastal cedar lumber was milled by Earthwise on private land next to a small town on Washington's coast. The owner was exploring a 60 year old clearcut next to 35 acres of old growth primary forest which will become a nature preserve, when he found huge logs had been left behind. In the 1960s, lumberjacks were logging this area to make cedar shake but for unknown reasons, these huge logs were cut and then left behind. As the owner made narrow roads through the clear cut, careful to avoid any new growth, he stacked the logs off to the side. Earthwise brought our Wood Mizer portable saw mill on site to see what the wood looked like when milled and this product is the result.
The unique and rare thing about this lumber is how old and small the trees that it came from are, relative to their age. If you go a mile or so inland, there is enough shelter from coastal storms that the trees are able to grow big and tall with much more growth each year (meaning wider growth rings). But these forests that are right up against the coast have been battered by centuries of storms such that only the strongest, slowest growing trees can survive. This means the lumber that comes out of them is incredibly tight grain. Old growth cedar lumber is very rare and is used in musical instruments, mask carving, fine furniture making and whatever awesome projects Earthwise customers can come up with! Since the lumber was milled to minimize the waste, there is a mix of live edge and all assortment of different sized lumber that is available.
