Last week, Seattle-based singer/songwriter Debbie Miller and photographer, Nate Watters, gave us a call requesting permission to stop by for drop-in photo shoot. It occurred to us, that seeing as we get this question often, how inspiring many people find salvage and salvage yards, yet don’t know quite how to use that inspiration..or what they’re even allowed to do with it.
EWCrew understand this request – that’s part of the fun of the salvage yard, right? We know all too well how chock full our smartphones’ storage are of salvage photos! In that light, we wanted to post a reminder that OF COURSE you can take photos at Earthwise stores – we absolutely encourage it! We just ask that you give credit when social sharing with the #EWSalvage hashtag or email us when you do so we can delight in your creativity as well – plus we are almost always happy to help promote your work as well if you’re a creative entrepreneur! (HELLO, #EWFamous promotion!)
This got us to thinking about how many people don’t know about or don’t take advantage of many services we offer that all too often would save you time or money, OR BOTH while also inspiring you or your business or the world – we like to think BIG right along with #YEW!
1. WORKSHOPS & DEMONSTRATIONS:
We’ve been offering workshops officially for a year now, we’ve heard many requests for more in-depth and more project-based themes. From building a door bookcase to touring #EWFamous breweries in Tacoma’s Downtown, this year offers 12 workshops for you to try starting at just $10! We also add sporadic drop-in sessions throughout the year to demonstrate new ways to use salvage or DIY projects we are working on. Make sure to let us know what workshop YOU want to take here!
2. COMMUNITY OUTREACH & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
We LOVE working with #YEW to directly impact the thriving communities of which we are so lucky to be a part! We are community event participants whenever possible and applicable to our mission – if you have an event coming up, let us know and we will put it on the calendar to help you get the word out, or we are happy to hear about sponsorship and outreach opportunities as well. Keep an eye on the calendar as well – there are volunteer opportunities that are popping up all the time and we’d love you to join the EWcrew when we participate.
Maybe you’re not available to participate? That’s ok! Consider making a salvage materials donation to Earthwise and a portion of those proceeds will go directly to the non-profit partner of your choice – Find out more about our salvage services here! We also offer reduced prices or donations for many projects in which we participate; if you are a member of a community organization, school, non-profit, theater, or organization seeking materials or a gift for a project or you/your organization are hosting an event and believe sponsorship or participation from Earthwise would benefit attendees, please let us know!
3. PETINA & DIY SALVAGE KITS:
Need to figure out how to make barnwood when you can’t find any at Earthwise? Chalkboard paint only comes in black…and costs $twenty-seven dollars A QUART?! How do you get the paint off those face plates you fell in love with? How the heck can I repurpose a bedspring? All of these questions and more are easily answered with EWSalvage Kits: they come with everything you need to make your salvaged projects that much simpler! Have you tried any of them? Starting at just $3 for the petina kits (PLUS unlimited 50-cent refills when you save the canister), they’re always a good way to introduce your people to salvage as well.
4. THE SALVAGE STRIP & FREE PROJECT ADVICE:
The blog you’re on now is where we post tutorials that we have personally tried, made display samples news about new projects and announcements that pertain to EW. But we also LOVE putting DIY projects as we find them on here. Staff members at Earthwise are on the cusp of industry trends, especially those that involve salvage and sustainability. We don’t charge for design or project advice – in fact, we LOVE hearing about your latest project and helping with it! If needed, you can even setup a time that works for you to tell us about your project and ask for our creative input
We love what we do. No seriously though – this isn’t just a job! Many of the employees started working at Earthwise because they were already salvage fanatics and often spend their weekend much the same way they spend their workdays: working on salvaged projects or looking for reusable stuff!
5. NEW EXPANDED CARPENTRY SERVICES:

Or you’ve never even considered using salvaged fir flooring throughout your whole house because the installation and refinishing process seems daunting! Well, don’t worry – EWSalvage would love to get you in contact with the finishing company or service provider that specializes in what you need and is familiar with using salvaged materials. We provide resources like this on a daily basis and we almost ALWAYS have at least one trusted provider that we would love to send you to.
