Wurlitzer Manor in Gig Harbor, Washington, was built in the 1980s around Opus #104, a Wurlitzer theater organ that first accompanied silent films at Brooklyn's Fox Theatre in 1928. When "talkies" made theater organs obsolete in the 1930s, it was dismantled and stored away later revived during the 1970s "pizza-and-pipes" era before software engineer Dick Wilcox bought it and commissioned an 11,000-square-foot home built specifically to house it.
The manor's significance lies in how fully it preserves a nearly lost art form. Rebuilt piece by piece and wired to a custom computer relay system controlling its four keyboards and 48 ranks of pipes, Opus #104 sits in a performance hall engineered entirely around its sound. Since 2002, owner Barbara Hammerman has considered herself a "caretaker" rather than an owner, keeping the home a living gathering place for musicians and an instrument that once defined the golden age of silent cinema.
